When We Ride, This is the PEV Safety Gear We Wear

by freshlycharged

We love riding PEVs like e-scooters, e-bikes, EUCs, and Onewheels but there is always a risk of accident and injury, so proper PEV safety gear is extremely important. The saying is, “Dress for the slide, not for the ride,” and we couldn’t agree more.

Just like a seat belt in a car, most of the time you won’t need the safety gear, but for those few times that you do fall or crash, you’ll be glad you had sufficient safety gear.

The key to proper safety gear is buying stuff you will wear. In this blog, we will share some of our favorite safety gear choices.

Helmets

Demon FR Link Helmet

Jimmy is constantly being asked what helmet he is wearing in his videos.

The Demon FR Link is Jimmy’s new favorite helmet. It is lightweight and comes with a removable chin bar. It is nice to have the option to remove the chin bar for low. speed riding and for when you need to pack your helmet for travel.

The helmet offers a sleek appearance and significant ventilation. The downside is it does not offer MIPS protection, and wind can get caught in your ears, so it can be hard to hear at higher speeds because of the wind noise.

Bell Super 3R Mips

I love this helmet. It also features a removable chin strap that you can remove when riding slower PEVs. The Bell Super 3R Mips is ultra light and comes in a ton of different colors. Even in full face helmet mode, there is plenty of ventilation to wear it on hot summer days.

A built-in visor is perfect for blocking the sun out of your eyes. It also comes with a GoPro mount if you want to do some filming.

Demon Podium Helmet

I love the look of the Podium Helmet. The Podium comes in many colors and with or without MIPS. I chose to get it with MIPS protection because I like to travel at higher speeds.

The podium does not have a removable chin strap so it is always a full face helmet. I did lose some bolts on the visor because I travel at high speeds with quite a bit of vibrations. You cannot buy the bolts seperately, and can only buy a bundle of bolts with a visor.

The replacement pack is $16 and unfortunately they are unique bolts that you cannot find at a hardware store. Make sure to tighten your bolts on the visor piece to avoid this costly mistake.

Bell Super Air R Mips Helmet

This is the helmet Jimmy has worn for the past few years before getting the Demon United FR Link helmet. The Bell Super Air R offers a removable chin strap and Mips protection. You cannot find the same color that Jimmy has but they have lots of other options.

The helmet offers great protection but is a little heavier than the Demon United FR Link helmet. However, Jimmy says air flows well through the Bell Super Air, and he has no problems hearing when wearing it.

TSG Pass Full Face Helmet

TSG Pass full face helmet really stands out with its clean lines and chrome lens. It’s great keep you warm on cold days since it is completely enclosed.

The helmet looks heavy but is really light. It comes with two lenses, clear and chrome, which are pretty easy to switch out.

The visor can fog up so I would look into some anti fog spray. You can also lift up the visor slightly and it will stay in place to create airflow. The airflow will help mitigate the fogging of the visor.

I love the way the helmet looks and feels, but the lense could definitely be improved. You are supposed to clean the lense for every ride which does help.

Its not a premium lense like Oakleys or high end sunglasses so keep that in mind. Your hearing is also limited because the helmet is completely enclosed.

Predator DH6-Xg

Can’t find your size in the TSG Pass? The Predator DH6-Xg helmet is very similar to the TSG Pass. The Predator helmet has a better lense, different pads for all head sizes, and vent at the mouth. It also comes with a black lense which is great for bright sunny days.

The Predator DH6-Xg is more expensive than the TSG Pass helmet but it fixes a lot of the downfalls to the TSG Pass.

What’s better on the Predator DH6-Xg helmet?

  • Lighter
  • Comes with three lenses
  • Better ventilation
  • Less fogging
  • One size fits most
  • Comes in a matte and glossy finish
  • Easier to hear

Upper Body Protection

Lazy Rolling Sweaters and Jackets

Lazy Rolling makes protective safety gear that is protective, comfortable, and stylish. Our favorite Lazy Rolling products are the upper body protection that come in the form of hoodies and jackets.

Lazy rolling gear is lined with Kevlar and pads can be added for extra protection. We love wearing their reflective jackets, which offer a ton of protection if we have an accident.

Kevlar helps prevent skin rashes. Pads on the back, shoulder, and elbows protect the most vulnerable spots in a roll. The reflective material shines bright at night, so you can be seen by oncoming vehicles.

Starting to get hot? Open up the vents underneath the armpits to create great airflow. The best part about wearing Lazy Rolling jackets is it makes Jimmy and I look like we work out.

The downsides: it can be a little on the pricey side, and the jackets can get hot during the summer.

Demon Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Top

I’ve broken my collarbone a few times from Onewheels and Snowboarding, so I sought out collarbone protection. To my surprise, there were not many solutions out there, except for the Demon Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Top.

The Flexforce X2 D30 top offers shoulder, spine, chest, ribs, elbow, clavicle, and forearm protection. The top comes in a material like Under Armor and zips up which makes it easy to put on. The top can be worn alone or under a jacket, and it offers amazing ventilation.

I do find that the products can run a little small, so I recommend sizing up if you are on the top end of the sizing chart.

Andromeda Makemake top

Andromeda uses Kevlar in their products at an economical cost. The Makemake top looks like a traditional flannel top. Open up the top and you’ll find padded shoulders, back, and elbows all lined with Kevlar to prevent skin damage in accidents.

Andromeda also pledges to use all Vegan materials. You get stylish safety gear while being eco friendly. The Makemake shirt is thick, so it can get hot in peak summer months.

Leatt Brace 3DF 6.0 Elbow Guards

Elbows are painful to brake. Elbow cuts typically require stitches due to the constant movement. I would much rather prevent elbow injuries than fix them.

The Leatt Brace 3DF 6.0 Elbow Guards are great for slipping on and adding hard shell protection. You want to make sure you get the right size, because you do not want the hard shell to slide during a fall.

EVS Men’s Elbow Guards

Jimmy ditched the expensive Leatt elbow guards and has gone with the cheap EVS Men’s elbow guards. I’m surprised how many people ask Jimmy where he got his elbow guards, and they are inexpensive Amazon elbow guards. Jimmy loves how quickly he can get them on and they offer a ton of coverage on your elbow and forearm.

Wrist and Hand Protection

Demon Flexmeter Wrist Guard Double Sided D3O

The Demon Flexmeter wrist guards offer the best wrist protection on the market. With flexible dorsal thermoplastic it offers amazing protection with a comfortable feel. There are removable skid plates that help your hands skid on the impact with hard surfaces, instead of absorbing it.

The Flexmeter wrist guards are bulky so they sometimes do not fit inside the sleeves of shirts, jackets, and gloves.

Flatland 3D wrist guards

These wrist guards were initially designed for eskate boarders using a remote control. They are very sleek and still allow your hands to move freely without restrictions. Some wrist guards can be bulky and hard to wear when riding an electric scooter.

The Flatland 3D wrist guards can be comfortably worn while riding bicycles or escooters. The biggest downfall to the Flatland 3D wrist guards is they are typically sold out, and don’t offer as much wrist protection as the Demon D3O flexmeter wrist guards.

Andromeda Meteor Winter Gloves

When I put on the Meteor Winter gloves by Andromeda, it makes me feel like I’m a superhero. While riding in cold weather, the Meteor gloves block out the cold wind chill and look stylish simultaneously. They offer carbon fiber knuckle protection, Kevlar, ventilation and wrist protection.

The Meteor Winter gloves look like leather, but they are made from vegan Superfabric®.

The downfalls are they don’t offer true wrist guard protection and have to be removed to use your phone. The wrist has quite a bit of padding and support, but you could still have a significant wrist injury if you slammed on the ground the wrong way. However, true wrist guards can feel awkward when attempting to hold a handlebar and pull a trigger throttle.

Leatt Dual Axis Knee and Shin Guards

Serious knee injuries can have an everlasting effects for the rest of your life. Our favorite knee guards are the Leatt Dual Axis Knee and Shin Guards. Our favorite feature is that you can place them on easily over pants with shoes on.

Most knee guards need to be pulled up so you have to remove your shoes, and they can feel uncomfortable over pants. The Leatt Dual Axis Knee and Shin Guards offer the best coverage and convenience.

Demon Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Shorts

Falling on your hip or tailbone can make you sore for weeks, months, and even years. I had a slow crash a few months back on an EUC, and I regretted I didn’t have my Demon Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Shorts on.

The crash was only going 5 mph and I didn’t even have a ton of bruising. I was walking around with a limp for a whole month. I was limping so bad that I thought I may have broken my femur.

If I had been wearing the The crash was only going 5 mph and I didn’t even have a ton of bruising. If I had been wearing the Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Shorts, I likely would not have injured myself.

The Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Shorts offer tailbone, butt, hip and thigh protection. It also has a Velcro attachment to connect to the Flexforce X2 D3O Men’s Top

Tools and Lighting

Shred Lights

Riding PEVs at night can be a recipe for disaster. Scooter and Onewheel tires are typically 11 inches or less. Hitting a massive pothole or hole in the dark, can leave you with a lifelong injury.

Good lighting is key to successfully riding safe at night. Shred lights has evolved over the past few years. In the past, some of their lights have been underwhelming.

The new Shred Lights offer mounts, lense diffusers, and brighter lights. You can now take one flashlight and customize to your needs and specific type of PEV. I am a huge fan of Shred Lights newest additions.

Fix It Stick

I wish scooter companies would send better tool kits. Most tool kits come with a allen key set that is soft as butter. Soft tools and soft bolts is a recipe for disaster and creates stripped bolts.

There is nothing worse than trying to fix something and stripping your bolts. I love the Fix It Stick that REV Rides carry. I fell in love with it when Jimmy and I went to review the VSETT Escooter line.

The tool is hardened steel and comes in a nifty carrying case. The design feels amazing in your hand when using it.

Blue Armor-Dilloz Tire Sealant

Jimmy and I first learned about Armor-Dilloz from riding Onewheels. Onewheels have always been shipped with green Slime standard in the tire. Onewheel riders kept getting flats even with the Slime.

Armor-Dilloz’s CEO, Cory Boehne, saw a huge problem and created a solution. Cory found a tire sealant made with ballistic fibers and rubber platelets used in the tires of military vehicles. Cory has adjusted the formula to be specific to tire size, type, and speed.

Armor-Dilloz has helped me fix a few flats, so I could get back on the road quickly. I like to carry a bottle with me just in case I run into a hairy situation. Make sure to carry a pump because a bottle of Armor-Dilloz is worthless without air.
