Insurance Coverage for Electric Scooters – Introducing StableCare

by Nathan Schaumann

E-Bike Insurance: Plentiful Options

If you are an E-bike owner looking to insure your bicycle, there are a variety of options. Geico and Progressive are both major insurance carriers that offer E-bike policies, and there are also E-bike specific insurance companies such as Velosurance, which offers both theft and crash coverage.

E-Scooter Insurance: StableCare

Electric Scooter owners, however, are in a bit of a rougher spot. There is only one legitimate option for Electric Scooter insurance as of this time of writing (if you find any others, let me know). The company is called StableCare, and it provides coverage (theft only) for electric scooters and other various micromobility devices.

You can read their full list of Terms & Conditions here.

StableCare Membership Tiers

StableCare offers 3 tiers of service, depending on the quality and durability of lock you use.

StableCare Steel: This plan includes 5 individual day-passes, and requires a scooter to be secured by a StableCare Gold eligible lock (list here). Total cost is $16 for a Segway Ninebot Max. Max coverage: $3500.

StableCare Gold: The Gold plan provides monthly coverage instead of a day-pass, and costs $8.50/month for a Segway Ninebot Max. The scooter is also required to be secured by a Gold eligible lock. Max coverage: $3500.

StableCare Diamond: The Diamond plan costs only $5.10/month, but the lock must be a StableCare Diamond eligible lock (list here). Max coverage: $10,000.

StableCare Policies

Seasonal Policies: If you only ride during the warmer months of the year, StableCare offers a policy that covers April 1 – November. 1

StableCareAlchemy”: Using two StableCare Gold locks automatically upgrades the user to a StableCare Diamond plan, without the need to purchase a StableCare Diamond lock.

Discounts: 5% discounts are applied for a scooter that:

  • Is prohibitively heavy to pick up
  • Is equipped with an alarm
  • Has an immobilizer
  • Has a GPS tracker

StableCare App: Being a StableCare member requires you to use their App to track where you park the scooter every time you leave it outside.

The Freshly Charged Take

StableCare seems like a reasonably priced, unique product offering for the somewhat few of us looking to insure an electric scooter. I input the details for my Rovoron Kullter Luxury and received a quote back for $10/month (Gold plan) or $6/month (Diamond plan), which is barely higher than the example quotes for a Segway Ninebot Max. I would consider purchasing a StableCare membership if I were moving to a high-crime area, or if I had a commute that required me to lock up my scooter outside frequently.

Before purchasing a membership plan, I would recommend checking out some independent reviews or Reddit threads such as this one.
