As PEV riders know, finding the right winter gear for scooters & EUCs in winter can be tough. Beyond the usual concerns of safety and visibility – rain, snow and ice add an extra layer of difficulty. So, what is the best gear for keeping yourself both safe and warm while riding in the winter? Here are our top picks:
Astro AI Balaclava – $7.19
This is a my favorite option for a face covering regardless of which style of helmet you wear. Pairing this with riding goggles, glasses or enclosed helmets can cause the glass/visor to fog up if you stop moving (since your exhaled breath is directed up towards your eyes), which can be problem at stoplights. When I use this balaclava I typically open my visor at stoplights, or if the light is short I hold my breath 😀
Tough Outdoors Winter Ski Mittens – $22.95
I find that mittens keep my hands much warmer than individual-finger gloves, and I have used these specific gloves for years without any issues. They are durable, super warm, and relatively comfortable to wear. The only issue with mittens is it can be tricky to ride a scooter with a trigger throttle. During the winter I adjust all of my trigger-throttle scooters so that the trigger is within reach of my thumb, which is safer than using my whole hand to pull the lever (which greatly reduces grip on the handlebar).
VELAZZIO Heated Gloves – $67.99
For me personally, heated gloves only do a marginally better job at keeping my hands warm compared to regular, non-heated mittens. However, if you regularly ride scooters with a trigger throttle, or need to do something requiring finder dexterity without removing your gloves, these are a good option. The heated gloves I personally use are no longer being sold on Amazon, but these ones look almost identical.
Adult Cycling Bike Helmet – $21.99
If your PEV is limited to speeds around 15-20mph, or if you prefer a more conventional cycling helmet, I’ve purchased 3 of these over the years and they are excellent. Comfortable, easily adjustable, and work well in conjunction with the balaclava I listed above.
GGBuy Motorcycle Helmet Riding Goggles – $15.99
I LOVE these riding goggles, and I wear them whenever I’m not wearing my full face helmet and it’s < 50 degrees outside. They are super comfortable, fit snug to my face, and don’t fog up nearly as badly as my full face helmet visor.
Here is me sporting the bicycle helmet, balaclava, riding goggles and red puffer jacket listed in this article.
Note: if you’re riding a high-powered PEV like the Wolf King GT pictured above, I always recommend wearing a full face helmet. This picture was taken 2 years ago, before I had a bad accident resulting in a broken jaw and a fervent commitment to upgrade my safety gear.
Lightweight Water-Resistant Puffer Jacket – $31.90
This jacket is amazing, especially given the price. I have been wearing mine for over 2 years, and I have taken it canyoneering, skiing, jogging, and of course endless PEV-riding. It is extremely light, but does an excellent job keeping out rain, wind and snow. It also packs well, and can be folded/squeezed to fit into even the smallest pocket of my backpack.
Predator DH6-Xe Helmet – $399.00
This helmet is a must-have for anyone riding high-powered PEVs, doing any sort of off-roading, or riding on the roads with cars. It is surprisingly light, features swappable visors for night/day riding, and is very comfortable. In the picture below you can see I have attached my Dragy on top to measure speed + acceleration, and I have also attached an Everbrite headlamp to improve visibility from the rear.
Enjoy a 20% discount and receive a complimentary silver mirror lens when you use the coupon code Fresh20, resulting in a total savings of nearly $160. Choose your preferred helmet color, apply the coupon code, and Predator will include the free lens in your shipment.
Ovetour 1000 Lumen USB Rechargeable Bike Light – $19.97
This is by far the brightest light you can purchase for less than $20. I have bought 5 different lights from Amazon, many of them claiming 2000+ lumens, but none of them were as bright as the Ovetour. Below you can see three pictures: the first with no light, the second with the integrated scooter light on my Megawheels S1, and the third with the Ovetour Bike Light. A must-have for any scooter or E-bike without Kaabo-style headlights (no $20 light can hold a candle to the Kaabo Wolf scooters). This light also comes with a rear light that is plenty bright and makes an excellent taillight. I have attached one of the taillights to both my Wolf Warrior and Wolf King GT, mainly because the Wolf scooters, despite their excellent front lights, have a low-set and fogged-over taillight that is difficult to see from behind.
EverBrite Headlamp – $7.99
I love this headlamp. It works well as both a front light and a taillight, but I prefer to use it as a taillight. I have one of these attached to both my full-face Predator helmet and bike helmet.
