Dualtron Spider Max

by Nathan Schaumann

The Dualtron Spider Max is getting a refresh! We gave it a full walkthrough and review, and were impressed by the numerous forward and rear-facing lights, relative portability, and zippy acceleration. Considering its top speed (42 mph) this scooter is pretty pricey, coming in at $2500, but it has plenty of other features that make it a worthy purchase for any scooter enthusiast. Keep reading for our full list of pros and cons of the Dualtron Spider Max.

Things We Love

Acceleration: Dualtron scooters are known for their square-wave controllers and punchy acceleration, and the Spider Max is no exception. We recently reviewed the Dualtron Forever, a slightly more budget-friendly 40 mph scooter, but the acceleration wasn’t quite as zippy as we are used to from Dualtron scooters. The Dualtron Spider Max definitely hits the sweet spot of quick acceleration, while still being controllable at lower speeds.

Front Light: The front light is very bright, and it shares its headlight with both the Dualtron Thunder 3 and the Dualtron X Limited. We also like that the light is mounted lower down, close to the fender, unlike the Dualtron Forever which has the light mounted up on the stem. A lower mounted light lets more of the available light hit the road in front of you, while also throwing up less light onto oncoming traffic.

RGB Lights: The Dualtron Spider Max has lights that run up and down both sides of the stem, and the scooter comes with a separate remote to adjust the light colors and patterns.

Rear Lights: As if we haven’t said enough about the lights already – the rear brake lights and turning signals on the Dualtron Spider Max look like spider eyes, and are super bright.

Kick Plate: Continuing with the spider imagery – the rear kick plate has the distinct pattern of a spider web! It’s also one of the largest kick plates we’ve ever seen on a scooter.

Display: We love the EY4 display. It’s easy to read in direct sunlight, has beautiful colors, and provides way more information than EY3 displays present on most other Dualtron scooters.

Bluetooth App: In addition to the information-loaded display, the app allows you to customize settings to your hearts content, which is even easier than using the buttons on the display.

Room For Improvement

Kick Plate Latch: In our recent review of the Dualtron Forever we specifically praised the kick plate design for having an indentation where the folding latch fits, so as not to get in the way of where you typically place your foot while riding. Unfortunately this design innovation didn’t make it over to the Spider Max, and so there is a large metal wedge right in the center of the optimal foot location.

Fender: The plastic fenders, especially the rear, feel cheap and rattles a good deal. There is also a rear “reflector” sticker that feels and looks very cheap.

Light Controls: While we love the variety of lights on the scooter, it is annoying that there are very few options about which lights you can switch on/off independently. In order to have the front-facing deck lights on, you need to also turn on the side deck lights and the stem RGB lights.

Low Top Speed: For a $2500 scooter, 42-44mph top speed isn’t exactly impressive. It would be nice to see a 50mph top speed on this scooter, which would fall in line nicely with the other premium and “pro” scooter features present on the Spider Max.

Tires: Very few Dualtron scooters have tubeless tires, which is somewhat annoying due to the increased frequency of pinch flats and general increased maintenance.

Fake Heat Sinks: The heat sinks on the side of the deck are made of plastic, which means they aren’t really heat sinks, they are just there for aesthetic.

The Freshly Charged Take

If you love the Dualtron brand, love cruising above 40mph, but don’t want to cash out on the top-of-the-line scooters like the X Limited or Thunder 3, the Spider Max is your sweet spot.
