Gotrax GX3 Review: Easily their BEST E-Scooter Yet

by Nathan Schaumann

We’ve reviewed a number of Gotrax dual motor scooters in the past, namely the GX0 and the GX1, but today we finally got our hands on Gotrax’s flagship model: the Gotrax GX3. It’s their most powerful, most expensive, and most futuristic scooter yet. We were impressed with the quality even before we finished setting up the scooter: the packaging job was excellent, and the tools provided were premium quality, not the junk tools that usually come with cheaper scooters.

Things We Love

Throttle – No Dead Zone: The vast majority of electric scooter throttles, whether trigger or thumb throttles, have the dreaded “dead zone”, which is a certain distance that you can engage the throttle with no power delivery to the motors. Not so with the GX3 throttle. The geometry of the design is also quite unique, and we haven’t seen this replicated by any other scooter company.

Locking Clip: The clip that hooks into the kickplate to lock the scooter in place when folded… is magnetized! This is a smart feature prevents the metal clip from rattling against the neck of the scooter when riding over bumpy terrain. Great thinking, Gotrax.

High-Speed Stability: Due to the stiff suspension, riding this scooter at high speeds feels rock solid. No stem wobble or squirrelly handling, just firm, confident riding.

Front Light: While it’s not the best front light we’ve ever tested (that distinction still goes to the Wolf King scooters… or the Dualtron X Limited), the Gotrax GX3 boasts a pretty impressive light. No auxiliary light needed for night riding.

Deck Height: This scooter has a relatively high stance, with a full 8 inches of clearance from the ground to the bottom of the deck. This makes it GREAT for off roading, or going up/down curbs.

Chargers: The Gotrax GX3 comes with two chargers, and one charging port on each side. This means that you won’t need to drape cables across the deck of the scooter if you only need to use one of the ports at a time.

Suspension: The suspension is all adjustable, which is an excellent feature on a mid-priced scooter. It is also fully hydraulic, so it doesn’t have the “springy” feeling of coil suspension, but feels nice and plush.

Things We Don’t Like

Park Mode: Usually when a scooter enters park mode, you deactivate park mode by tapping the brakes, and the scooter re-enters whatever the last speed mode was set to. The Gotrax GX3, unfortunately, always reverts to speed mode 1, and it is tiring to constantly have to change to your desired speed mode after each stop.

Instructions: The instruction manual provided by Gotrax is inadequate, especially considering the rather large number of buttons on the cockpit.

Brakes Swapped: 99% of electric scooters have the rear brake on the left, and the front brake on the right. For some reason, Gotrax switched this on the GX3, and it can be difficult to remember if you are constantly switching between scooters like we are. It could also prove dangerous if you need to brake quickly and you accidentally grab the front instead of rear brake, and go flying over the handlebars.

Low-End Torque: It does get up to 38mph, but it takes a while to get there. The acceleration is anything but zippy, especially at lower speeds. This is a little disappointing for a dual 1000W motor scooter, but on the plus side the acceleration is very smooth and predictable.

The Freshly Charged Take

The Gotrax GX3 is a great scooter for the price point. Gotrax is a US-based company with an established name in the industry, and they’ve been at this for over 6 years. The GX3 has solid suspension, a smooth ride, and a lot of features not common in other scooter brands. It’s a great pick for off-road or on-road riding.
