A Review of the Begode C8 Electric Unicycle

by David Eastley

Today, we’re taking a look at a recent addition to the electric unicycle market: the Begode C8. This model is presented as an evolution of the company’s older Nicola platform, updated with modern features. Here is an objective assessment of the C8 to help determine if it meets its design goals.

Design and Build Quality

Upon inspection, the Begode C8 shows a clear effort to modernize the Nicola design. The unit features integrated lighting and a more refined finish than some of Begode’s past models. The wide tire and visible suspension components suggest a focus on ride stability and comfort.

However, the wheel’s wide profile presents a significant design trade-off. While it contributes to the unit’s stability, it can also lead to discomfort for the rider. The side pads may press against the user’s shins, particularly during long rides or for those with a wider stance. This is a point of consideration for potential buyers regarding ergonomics.

Performance and Handling

The primary feature of the C8 is its suspension system, which effectively absorbs minor road imperfections like cracks and uneven pavement. This results in a smoother ride compared to non-suspension wheels and can reduce rider fatigue over longer distances.

The C8 is reasonably agile for its size, allowing for controlled carving and turns. The stock pedals are large and provide adequate grip. The wheel also includes a built-in speaker system for audio playback, a feature some users may find convenient.

In terms of construction, the C8 feels relatively solid, suggesting it is built to withstand regular use.

Drawbacks and Areas for Improvement

No product is without its flaws, and the C8 has several points that warrant discussion. The wide body, as mentioned, negatively impacts ergonomics, and also makes seated riding impractical.

The handles designed for lifting and maneuvering the wheel when powered off are not optimally placed, making it somewhat cumbersome to carry. The unit’s weight distribution, combined with its width, makes it feel particularly unwieldy when not in use.

The companion mobile app, a common point of criticism for the brand, remains a weak point. It can be inconsistent with connectivity and lacks the polish of competitor software.

Other issues include:

  • The front headlight, which lacks the brightness needed for safe nighttime riding.
  • An upward-facing charging port that is susceptible to debris accumulation if the cover is not secured.
  • An instruction manual that is not comprehensive and lacks clear guidance.
  • The potential for speed-related instability over 35 mph, a trait that may be attributed to its smaller wheel diameter.
  • A top-mounted display that suffers from poor visibility in direct sunlight.
  • A narrow kickstand that offers limited stability on uneven surfaces.Screenshot 2025 08 05 084440

Intended User

The Begode C8 is best suited for a specific type of rider. Individuals who were fond of the original Nicola and are looking for a similar form factor with the addition of suspension will likely find the C8 appealing. Its stability makes it a viable option for commuters who prioritize a planted feel on the road.

However, riders who require comfortable seated riding, are sensitive to the ergonomic issues of a wide-body design, or who expect a polished software experience may want to consider other models.

Conclusion

The Begode C8 is a notable update to a classic design, incorporating key features like suspension that bring it up to modern standards. It offers a stable and generally comfortable ride for standing users. However, it is held back by several design quirks and a lack of refinement in key areas like user ergonomics, software, and secondary features.
