What are the AIMA Big Sur specifications?

The AIMA Big Sur is a class 3 e-bike with a 750W motor that has a top speed of 28 mph. It features 26″ x 4″ puncture-resistant fat tires with brown walls and reflective strips. The battery is a 48V 15Ah (720Wh) unit with high quality LG M50LT 21700 cells – the same used in Tesla vehicles. The bike weighs 82 lbs and has a UL-rated electrical system for safety.

What is the cockpit and display like on the AIMA Big Sur?

The AIMA Big Sur features a Bafang TFT LCD display that remains crisp and readable in direct sunlight. The display includes a USB-A charging port for devices. The cockpit has Tektro hydraulic brake levers, an 8-speed Shimano thumb and trigger shifter, and a thumb throttle. The handlebar grips don’t twist, locking on both sides with wing grips for comfort.

What is the battery and motor performance of the AIMA Big Sur?

During testing, we achieved the advertised 28 mph top speed. The motor showed a peak output of 1218W on the display during hard acceleration, suggesting a peak capacity around 1300W. The battery is easily removable with a lock and safety button to prevent dropping. The torque sensor provides a natural riding feel, responding to pedal pressure rather than rotation speed.

What is the drivetrain on the AIMA Big Sur?

The drivetrain includes a 170mm crank set with a 52-tooth chain ring and chain guard. It uses a Shimano Altus derailleur with an 8-speed 11×34 tooth cassette. The torque sensor makes the bike feel like a traditional bicycle with added power, unlike the more artificial feel of cadence sensors.

How does the AIMA Big Sur handle off-road riding?

The AIMA Big Sur performs well on light off-road terrain. It has front coil suspension with 80mm of travel, adjustable preload, and lockout. The fat tires handle loose gravel effectively. Being a hardtail, the rear does bounce on rough terrain, but the oversized seat helps absorb some impact. The bike handles small jumps adequately, though the front suspension can bottom out occasionally.

How well does the AIMA Big Sur climb hills?

Hill climbing is moderate. The bike struggled to climb a steep hill from a standstill during our test, making it about three-quarters of the way up. With a rolling start at about 15 mph, it managed to climb the same hill, though with some effort. This performance is, unfortunately, typical for fat tire e-bikes in this category.

What are the brakes and safety features on the AIMA Big Sur?

The AIMA Big Sur uses Tektro hydraulic brakes with 203mm brake discs front and rear. It has an oversized front light and a rear tail light that functions as a brake light. The bike includes plastic fenders front and rear and a rear reflector.

What comfort features does the AIMA Big Sur have?

The bike features one of the largest custom-developed seats we’ve seen on an e-bike, providing good cushioning. The geometry allows for comfortable riding, including no-handed operation. The bike has clean cable management with secure connectors that only fit in one direction, preventing bent pins.

What accessories come with the AIMA Big Sur?

The AIMA Big Sur includes an MIK HD rear rack with a 27kg (60lb) weight capacity, plastic fenders front and rear, and an oversized kickstand. The quick-release for the motor cable makes tire changes easier than on many competing models.

The Freshly Charged Take

The AIMA Big Sur delivers a smooth riding experience with numerous high quality components, especially the battery.. The torque sensor provides natural pedaling, and the display is clear in all conditions. While it’s heavy at 82 lbs and not exceptional at hill climbing, it offers good value for riders wanting a comfortable fat tire e-bike with class 3 speeds. The bike is best suited for riders who want a mix of road and light off-road capabilities with the benefit of a solid torque sensor system.
