$999 Lectric XP 4.0 Deep Dive: Big Improvements, Same Great Price

by Nathan Schaumann

The Lectric XP 4.0 folding fat tire e-bike is finally here, and after getting some hands-on time with it, including an epic ride around the Grand Canyon South Rim, it’s clear Lectric has delivered some serious upgrades while impressively keeping the starting price at just $999. This latest iteration builds on the massive success of the XP 3.0, adding features usually found on much pricier bikes. Available in both a 500W version ($999) and a more powerful 750W version ($1299), the XP 4.0 aims to solidify Lectric’s position as a leader in the affordable e-bike market. We are constantly impressed by how Lectric manages to release such capable E-bikes at sub-$1000 price points, and the XP 4.0 is no exception.

Key Upgrades from XP 3.0

Lectric made substantial improvements across the board for the XP 4.0. One of the most noticeable changes is the brand-new TFT LCD display. It’s bright, easy to read even in direct sunlight, and it’s removable. It also offers different menu screens showing details like cadence, trip distance, and motor power.

The biggest upgrade, however, might be the switch to a torque sensor. This is a huge improvement over the previous cadence sensor, providing much smoother, more intuitive pedal assist without the jerky starts or power runoff. It makes the bike feel significantly more refined.

They’ve also added custom hydraulic brakes (branded Starlink 602, a reference to Lectric’s area code) paired with 28% thicker rotors for better stopping power. The drivetrain also gets an upgrade with a Shimano Altus shifter and derailleur – a welcome change vs previous components, offering smoother shifting. The throttle is now a thumb throttle on the left side, replacing the old twist throttle.

Other key improvements include:

  • Improved Geometry: The frame geometry and handlebar angle feel more balanced and comfortable, making it easier to lift the front end.
  • New Hybrid Tires: The 20×3 inch tires feature a flatter center patch for efficiency on pavement and knobbier edges for grip off-road.
  • Massive Chainring: A 56-tooth chainring helps prevent ghost pedaling at higher speeds.
  • Better Grips: Upgraded locking grips that don’t twist.
  • Quieter Fenders: Polypropylene fenders that reduce noise from debris.
  • Relocated Key: The key slot is now on the side, and the key isn’t needed to operate the bike.
  • Faster Charging: The bike can now handle a 5A charger.
  • New Pedals: Quick-release pedals that are easier to use.
  • Level Up Rack: An innovative rear rack system with a 150 lb capacity for mounting various accessories.
  • Integrated Lights: Includes a rear taillight that functions as a brake light, plus turn signals.

Riding Experience: How Does the Lectric XP 4.0 Feel?

Thanks to the torque sensor, riding the Lectric XP 4.0 feels incredibly natural. The power comes on smoothly as you pedal, matching your effort rather than just kicking in abruptly. The improved geometry makes the bike feel well-balanced and nimble, and quite easy to handle despite its fat tires. The 750W motor version I tested provides plenty of power, accelerating quickly and tackling hills without much trouble.

The Shimano Altus system shifts much more smoothly than the previous setup, and the hydraulic brakes offer excellent stopping power. The new hybrid tires also provide a good balance between rolling smoothly on pavement while offering decent grip on looser surfaces. Even pedaling with the assist switched off feels better, thanks to the large 56T chainring which provides good resistance even around 16 mph, reducing the ‘ghost pedaling’ feeling common on other folding e-bikes.

Lectric XP 4.0 Q&A (Specifications)

Q: What motor does the Lectric XP 4.0 have? A: It comes with either a 500W or 750W rear hub motor. The 750W version has a peak output of 1,310 watts, providing strong acceleration.

Q: What are the battery options and range? A: The 500W model has a 48V, 10.4Ah battery. The 750W model gets a larger 48V, 17.5Ah battery. In my testing with the 750W version (200lb rider, low input, high throttle/PAS 5 usage), I got 27 miles of range before the battery hit 0%.

Q: How much does the Lectric XP 4.0 cost? A: The 500W version starts at $999, and the 750W version is $1299.

Q: What kind of sensor does it use? A: It uses a torque sensor, which provides much smoother and more responsive pedal assist compared to the cadence sensor on the XP 3.0.

Q: What are the brakes like? A: The XP 4.0 features custom hydraulic disc brakes (Starlink 602) with 28% thicker rotors for improved stopping power and heat dissipation.

Q: What kind of display does it have? A: It has a new color TFT LCD display that’s bright, easy to read in sunlight, and removable. It shows speed, battery level, PAS level, odometer, trip distance, cadence, and motor power.

Q: What are the tires? A: It uses 20″ x 3″ tires with a new hybrid tread pattern designed for both pavement efficiency and off-road grip.

Q: Is the Lectric XP 4.0 foldable? A: Yes, it retains its popular folding design, making it compact for storage or transport.

Q: What’s the rear rack capacity? A: The new “Level Up” rear rack system has a payload capacity of 150 lbs.

Q: Does it have lights and turn signals? A: Yes, it includes an integrated rear taillight that also functions as a brake light, plus integrated turn signals. The front headlight is included but is relatively basic (around 90 lumens).

Q: Can it be charged quickly? A: Yes, the battery system now supports 5A fast charging.

What Could Be Improved on the Lectric XP 4.0?

While the Lectric XP 4.0 is impressive for its price, it’s not perfect. The front headlight, while improved with side lights, is still quite dim at around 90 lumens. For regular night riding, you’ll definitely want a brighter, handlebar-mounted light.

The front suspension is still a basic coil fork. It does the job of smoothing out smaller bumps, but hydraulic suspension would offer better performance, though that’s likely unrealistic at this price point.

Some riders might miss the old twist throttle, as the XP 4.0 now uses a thumb throttle. This is largely a matter of personal preference, but the thumb throttle works well.

Finally, while the bike folds easily, it can be a bit unwieldy when folded. Adding a simple strap to keep the two halves locked together during transport would be a nice touch (though you can easily add your own Velcro strap).

Who is the Lectric XP 4.0 For?

Based on my experience, the Lectric XP 4.0 is an excellent choice for several types of riders. It’s almost perfect for anyone living the RV, van, or camper lifestyle who needs a compact, foldable e-bike for getting around campsites or towns. Its $999 starting price makes it incredibly accessible.

It’s also ideal for budget-conscious buyers who want modern e-bike features like a torque sensor and hydraulic brakes without spending a fortune. If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck under $1000 (or $1300 for the upgraded version), the XP 4.0 is hard to beat.
