The Onewheel GT S-Series caused a significant stir in the Onewheel community when it was released last year. We wrote a full review on it here, which focused on the increased safety features, higher top speed and higher sticker price. At $3200, the S-Series (also called the GTS) was by far the most expensive Onewheel ever released, and it did a pretty good job of living up to the hype.
Just a few weeks ago, Future Motion (Onewheel’s parent company) made a few significant moves: first, they reduced the price of the Onewheel GT S-Series by $300, from $3200 to $2900, then they released a new iteration of the S-Series called the “Onewheel GT S-Series with Recurve Rail”, priced at $3200, and lastly they released a further iteration called the “Onewheel GT S-Series Rally Edition”, priced at $3500. So what are these new configurations, and are they worth the money?
Onewheel GT S-Series: Base Model
If you were looking for the regular S-Series without the new fancy bells and whistles, there’s never been a better time to pick one up than now. $2900 is a lot different than $3200, and the S-Series is still the fastest, highest voltage, and safest (in our opinion) Onewheel on the market. Notable specs/features include the 25mph top speed, 113 volt drivetrain, concave footpads and intelligent BMS. Read our full article here.
Onewheel GT S-Series with Recurve Rail
On the left is a picture of the base model GT S-Series, and on the right is the S-Series with the Recurve Rail. As you can tell from comparing the two images, the “recurve rail” features more aggressively angled footpads, which provides better ground clearance without actually increasing the height of your stance on the board. It allows for faster acceleration, faster braking, and generally more control when riding on trails. It’s also interesting to note that the new design is asymmetrical, with the “forward” direction being towards the right in the picture shown above.
To quote Future Motion, “Recurve Rails, developed in collaboration with the Onewheel Factory Pro Team, utilize a new asymmetric rail geometry to offer improved control and leverage without sacrificing clearance to handle the most rugged terrain and the steepest gradients.”
Key Changes
- Price increase ($2900 to $3200)
- Sharper angled footpads
- Better ground clearance
- Better handling & performance
Onewheel GT S-Series Rally Edition
The Rally Edition is a further upgrade to the Recurve Rails, featuring a smaller 6″ motor hub, and a thicker tire with more volume to improve vibration dampening. While subtle, you can tell a slight difference in the original 6.5″ motor hub with a thinner tire (left picture) and the smaller 6″ motor hub with a thicker tire (right picture).
Key Changes
- Price increase ($2900 to $3500)
- Smaller 6″ motor hub
- Thicker tire
The Freshly Charged Take
We’re a huge fan of Future Motion taking giant steps to meet the demands of Onewheel fans, especially avid trail riders. While the biggest criticism of Future Motion remains the inability to modify your own board, adding multiple editions and configurations allows for at least some creativity when designing and speccing out your dream board.
Also check out the recently released FST “Fluid Stance Technology” footpad system here, that allows you to add different-sized pads and grips for maximum stability on trails and jumps.
