VMAX VX4 – Swiss Precision Hits the US Streets

by Andrew N

In our previous review of VMAX scooters like the VMAX VX4, we were impressed overall, but we had two significant concerns: the top speed and the prices. However, VMAX took our feedback seriously and swiftly made improvements. They’ve increased the top speeds and reduced prices by a substantial 20%.

Today, we take a closer look at VMAX’s flagship model, the VX4, blending Swiss engineering with modern electric mobility. In this review, we will dive into what we love and what can be improved on VMAX VX4. Top speed has been increased to 25 mph (up from 22 mph), and the price is $1199 at the time of writing. The refreshed VX4 also now has a regenerative rear disc brake.

Powerful Hill Climber for Urban Terrain

I was blown away that a 500-watt motor was able to accelerate my 220-lb (99 kg) body so easily up hills. Most single-motor commuter scooters come to a crawl when I hit the steep hills by our house, but the VX4 kept accelerating and maintained speed on the steepest parts. The motor peaks at 1500 watts and I was beyond impressed with the VX4 acceleration curve.

Enhanced Safety with Bright Turn Signals and IPX6 Water Resistance

Prioritizing rider safety, the VX4 boasts bright turn signals for optimal visibility and an impressive IPX6 water resistance rating, ensuring durability in diverse weather conditions. The turn signals are at the end of the handlebars and rear of the deck so oncoming vehicles and pedestrians can see them from all angles.

The IPX6 water resistance rating means that the VX4 can handle high-pressure sprays of water from all directions.

Smooth Ride with Front and Back Suspension

Enjoy a comfortable journey with the VX4’s well-designed front and back suspension system, effectively absorbing shocks and vibrations for a seamless riding experience. The front suspension has two inches of travel and the rear has rubber suspension. Most of the suspension on commuter scooters are low quality and easy to bottom out, especially under my 220 lb frame.

Spacious Design with Large Deck and Kick Plate

The deck on the VX4 is the largest we have seen on a commuter scooter and it is complemented by a kick plate with the perfect angle. You have plenty of space on the VX4 to shuffle your feet so you don’t get fatigued on longer rides.

Turning Signal Rubber Covers

No matter how well-designed the kickstand, scooters are prone to falling over, whether they get bumped, pushed over in the wind, or parked on a slope. The first thing that is going to hit the ground is the turning signals, if they are mounted to the handlebar. We have cracked numerous plastic turning signals in exactly this way, but the VMAX scooters have their turning signals covered by a protective rubber cover. Excellent idea!

10″ x 2.7″ Hybrid Tubeless Pneumatic Tires

The VX4 is equipped with 10″ x 2.7″ hybrid tubeless pneumatic tires, while most commuter scooters come with 10″ x 2.25″ or smaller street tires. The hybrid off-road tires provide excellent traction on loose gravel, while the rounded profile enables effortless carving and turning on smooth pavement.

Battery Options and UL Certification for Peace of Mind

Tailor your ride with three battery-size options while enjoying the confidence of UL certification. Most electric scooters come in one battery size so I love that with all VMAX scooters, you can choose the battery size that fits your needs.

Sleek Aesthetics and Intuitive TFT LCD Display

The Swiss engineering really shines with the VX4’s sleek and clean design. The beautiful lines, hidden wires, matte black finish, grippy handlebar grips, and beautiful 4-inch TFT LCD display make it my favorite-looking commuter scooter. Most commuter scooters look like a rebranded Xiaomi M365, so I love that VMAX broke the mold with the VX4.

We have never seen a TFT LCD display on any commuter scooter and have only found them on scooters like the Kaabo Mantis King GT, NAMI Klima, Kaabo Wolf King GT, Kaabo Wolf King GTR, Teverun Fighter Supreme, and NAMI BURN-E MAX 2. All those scooters are in the high-powered electric scooter category that boasts speeds of 40+ mph.

Commuter Scooter Designed for Various Terrains

The VX4 is not just a scooter; it’s a commuter’s dream designed to navigate various terrains effortlessly, providing a versatile and reliable mode of urban transportation. It’s no surprise that the VX4, crafted in Switzerland, stands out as the most versatile commuter scooter we’ve featured on the channel—akin to the versatility of a Swiss Army Knife.

Enhanced Security Features:

Set a passcode for added security, ensuring your VX4 remains protected. Plus, revel in the scooter’s noise-free performance, even during jumps or curb drops.

What could be improved on the VMAX VX4

  • No app for the scooter
  • Only two-speed modes to choose from
  • The locking mechanism when folded can come undone if upward pressure isn’t constantly applied
  • The silicone deck gets dirty easily.

No Bluetooth App

The VX2 Pro electric scooter comes with a Bluetooth app so I was surprised that the VX4 did not have one. An app on the VX4 could enhance the user experience by providing additional functionalities such as tracking, diagnostics, and customization options.

Additionally, having only two-speed modes might be restrictive for riders seeking more nuanced control.

Locking Mechanism and Deck Maintenance

The locking mechanism when folded requires constant upward pressure to prevent accidental unfolding. You need to be careful while lifting the scooter while folded because any downward pressure can cause the scooter to unfold and come crashing down. It would be painful to have 64 lbs come crashing down on your body.

Moreover, the silicone deck’s susceptibility to dirt may necessitate frequent cleaning for users who value a pristine appearance.

Conclusion:

In the crowded landscape of electric commuter scooters, the VMAX VX4 makes a bold entrance, embodying the precision and craftsmanship associated with Swiss engineering. With an array of impressive features and a few areas for enhancement, the VX4 establishes itself as a noteworthy contender for one of my favorite all-terrain commuter scooters.

As the VMAX brand gains traction in the US market, it will be intriguing to witness how it continues to innovate and refine its offerings in the electric scooter space.
