Veteran Sherman L Review – The Ultimate Long-Range Electric Unicycle

by Nathan Schaumann

LeaperKim has released the latest edition of the Sherman: the Veteran Sherman L. We’ve reviewed a number of previous LeaperKim wheels, including the Veteran Lynx, Veteran Sherman, Veteran Sherman Max and Veteran Abrams, but the Sherman L is the longest range, biggest and most expensive LeaperKim wheel yet. It also has an excellent suspension system, tons of power, and some added safety features that make this wheel one of a kind. Keep reading for our full review of the Veteran Sherman L, a full list of pros and cons, and whether or not we think you should get this wheel.

Things We Love

Power Delivery: The 3200W motor provides plenty of torque and accelerating power at any speed, up almost any incline. It’s super smooth, and doesn’t beep even when accelerating hard at 40mph.

Suspension: All Veteran wheels have excellent suspension, and the Veteran Sherman L is no exception. The FastAce suspension provides 90mm of travel, with 3 different spring options, either 62lbs, 66lbs or 70lbs. We wish there were an option even heavier than 70lbs for extreme off-road riding for heavier riders, but overall we love the customizability and quality of the suspension.

Display: The display features 4 buttons (instead of the common 2 or 3), and allows you to optimize and control all of the functions on the EUC, without having to pull out your phone.

Pads: The adjustable front toe lock is great on all Veteran wheels. It is easy to adjust on the fly, to adapt to different styles of riding.

Velcro Attachments: We put custom pads on almost every EUC we ride, and the Veteran Sherman L shell makes it easy to swap out the pads, with side panels that are very easy to stick velcro to.

Front Light: The headlight on the Veteran Sherman L is super bright, provides plenty of light for safe night riding, but can be a little blinding for oncoming cars or traffic.

Trolley Handle: This is a significant upgrade from previous Veteran wheels. Old trolley handles were rickety and broke easily, but the Sherman L has a sturdy handle with significantly reduced flex. The kickstand is also upgraded, and feels solid and sturdy.

Battery: The biggest plus of the Veteran Sherman L is the massive battery. The 4000Wh pack gives you over 100 miles of reliable, real-world range, and it’s incredible that they have been able to reduce weight on the Sherman L while increasing the battery size by 50%.

Hall Sensor: To improve safety, Leaperkim have developed a hall sensor that is redundant, allowing the wheel to be operated while the hall sensor is damaged or broken. This represents a huge safety upgrade, and is an important step towards eliminating cutouts entirely.

Room For Improvement

Tire: This is one of the worst stock street tires we’ve reviewed in a while – the distinct shape of the tread causes it to “train-track” while riding, or get stuck in a groove or rut at a certain angle on the tire, especially at slower speeds.

Size: Although the weight has been reduced, the size is still a big negative. It’s bulky, wide, hard to maneuver at slow speeds, and uncomfortable to transport. We’d pick the Lynx over the Sherman L for any trip that doesn’t require the massive range of the 4000Wh battery.

Cost: This is one of the most expensive wheels on the market, at nearly $4500, which can be a major prohibiting factor to this wheel gaining popularity.

Turning Signals: Turning signals as a concept on EUCs are quite baffling – by the time the wheel has registered that you have leaned to the right or the left to initiate a turn, usually you have already completed the turn. We think Leaperkim and all EUC manufacturers can just get rid of this feature.

Seat: For a long-range wheel like this, you really need a seat. The wheel itself is somewhat uncomfortable to sit on, and a nice large plush seat would be a huge value-add.

The Freshly Charged Take

If it weren’t for the issues with the tire, we’d pick this wheel over the Lynx. It has tons of range, tons of power, an awesome suspension design, hall sensor redundancy, an improved trolley handle, and the overall fit and finish is fantastic. It’s the only wheel on the market that provides this combination of range and unique safety features. It’s not a perfect wheel, but it’s a solid new addition to the rapidly growing high-end EUC lineup.
