Onewheel Fender Noise Reduction: Easy and Cheap Tip

by freshlycharged

You can significantly decrease fender rattling in a day and for less than $20. The fender is great for keeping your board, shoes, and legs clean but the biggest drawback to the fender is all the noisy rattling from rocks and debris that gets kicked up by the tire.

I wanted to reduce the distracting rattling when I ride on gravel trails and roads so I tested a product called 3M 03584 Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating – 16 oz. Here is my experience and this is my review (spoiler alert, this stuff is great!):

The product description on Amazon says the following:

  • Multi-purpose undercoating may be applied to cars, truck and recreational vehicles
  • Sound deadening properties help reduce road noise
  • Asphalt-based product is excellent for wheel wells, quarter panels, interior fenders, under the hood and more
  • Protects the undercarriage of vehicles from rust and abrasion
  • Aerosol dispenser allows for easy spray-on application

I put in bold text the areas above that interest me the most: this product is excellent for fenders and it has sound deadening properties to help reduce road noise. Perfect.

Step 1: I bought a can from Amazon and it came to me in two days. Magic.

Step 2: I washed the fender and let it dry.

Step 3: I shook the can thoroughly and began the application process outside. Man this stuff stinks.

Step 4: I put on additional coats for a total of 3 coats, waiting anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes in between coats.

Step 5: I let it cure and set for 24 hours (the label says a minimum of 1 hour)

Step 6: I check for full adhesion. A few areas had bubbled up for some reason. I just pushed it firmly with my fingers and it seemed to adhere and bond to the fender.

Step 7: Attach the fender to your Onewheel and enjoy a more pleasant ride.

The difference in fender noise is night and day. For under $20 and in less than a day you can significantly decrease fender noise with this product from 3M. Check it out at Amazon!

Rad Tip:
You can probably find this cheaper at your nearby auto parts store such as Autozone. Make some phone calls. But if your time is more valuable, order it on Amazon. The can will even be delivered to your door fully shaken!

While there are other products out there that are may be less expensive, the 3M undercoating spray is the highest rated on Amazon and from other online review sites. For example, Autofella.com rates the 3M spray as the highest rated undercoating spray around. This is from Autofella.com:
